What dish from another country disgusts you?
It is well known that one should face one's fears in order to overcome them. In that sense, a visit to the Disgusting Food Museum, which opens in Malmö on October 29, is one big therapy session. But do you really have to overcome every negative feeling?
Disgusting Food Museum: Can You Overcome Your Disgust?
Isn't disgust even intended to keep us from eating spoiled food? Definitely, says the museum. But: Perhaps overcoming our disgust could also help us to eat more sustainably in the future. Keyword: insects as a source of protein. Or algae.
We will help you to find out whether a visit is worthwhile and show you some of the “specialties” that you will soon be able to admire in the museum and sometimes even try.
But be careful: read on only when you are full. Because afterwards you are guaranteed to have no more appetite. There is also a food item that you may not find so disgusting yet.
The sight of this drink is enough to send ice-cold chills down the spine of the beholder. Because this wine, which is to be made in China and Korea, contains dead mice. Whereby it doesn't hit dead mice. They are dead BABY mice. They swim naked at the bottom of the wine bottles. However, the wine should not be a luxury food, but rather cure diseases.
Sharp rabbit heads
Eating rabbit may not sound too unusual to any non-vegetarian. Rabbit heads are also considered a delicacy. The idea of eating their insides, however, may trigger a choke on even one or the other hard-nosed meat eater. Yes, we're talking about the brains of the cute little animals.
Because, as reported by the British newspaper “Daily Mail”, among others, it is a real delicacy in the Chinese province of Sichuan. To get to the inside, connoisseurs first crack the skull and then slurp out the brain.

Dead mice, brain - you have enough already? Then maybe you shouldn't go to the Disgusting Food Museum. Because it can get worse.
How about sex organs? Bull penis is a real delicacy in Korea, among other places, and of course it shouldn't be missing in the museum:
Cheese with worms
Before food becomes furry and looks like it is about to walk out of the refrigerator on its own, we usually throw it away. The Sardinians, on the other hand, only find their cheese really tasty when it comes to life.
Casu Marzu is the name of the delicacy from Sardinia, which also has an exhibition space in the Disgusting Food Museum.
It is a sheep's cheese that ripens until it contains maggots. However, caution is advised when enjoying it, if you can put it that way: the maggots that are usually eaten are sometimes resistant to stomach acid and can get into the digestive tract.
If you now think that all the disgusting dishes that the museum exhibits are of animal origin and as a vegetarian you would be safe from having to try something there, you are wrong. There are also disgusting dishes without meat, the so-called millennial eggs for example. Their name is a slight exaggeration, even if the eggs look like they're already in the process of decay.
In fact, the raw eggs are placed in a pulp made from aniseed, fennel grains and other spices and mature in it for "only" three months. During this time, the egg white takes on a jelly-like consistency and turns brown. The egg yolk turns green and has a consistency similar to cottage cheese.

In China, for example, eggs are eaten with soy sauce, vinegar and ginger.
If you are vegan and think, "It is clear that everything that is on display in this museum is made from animal products," we have to disappoint you. There are also gross vegan dishes, such as natto.
The dish is soybeans that have been mixed with bacteria. This creates a string of slime on the beans. The dish is mainly eaten in Japan.
If you've made it this far but you're thinking, "How disgusting, I'd never eat something like this!", You shouldn't read any further now. Because among the pictures that you can find on the museum's website is one of a food that we in Germany eat every day, sometimes in huge quantities: pork.

To make it clear what is so disgusting about it, the museum has provided the model of a piglet with lots of syringes. The exhibits also include other foods that are popular in western longitudes, such as liquorice or root beer.
