The Battle of Hogwarts took place on May 2nd, 1998, at the end of the Second Wizarding War. The Death Eaters, led by Lord Voldemort, fought the final battle for rule in the wizarding world, as most of the resistance fighters gathered at Hogwarts. The Order of the Phoenix, led by Remus Lupine, defended Hogwarts. The battle ended with the final annihilation of Voldemort by Harry Potter.
The Order of the Phoenix agreed on a battle plan with the teachers at Hogwarts: Kingsley Shacklebolt, Remus Lupine, and Arthur Weasley led groups onto the grounds. Fred and George Weasley led groups to defend the secret passages. Neville Longbottom, Pormona Sprout, and a few other Hogwarts fighters defended the castle with magical herbs.
Professor Flitwick cast statues as guards by magic.
Professor McGonagall had all armor marched to the school's borders to defend it. Finally, all teachers took protective measures, including the regulation that only students older than seventeen and therefore of legal age were allowed to fight and created a magical protective shield.
Battle for the diadem
In the Room of Requirement, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley fight against Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle for Ravenclaw's tiara. Harry Potter and his friends want the diadem in order to destroy it; Draco Malfoy's group wants to hand Harry Potter over to Lord Voldemort. Vincent Crabbe dies of his own demon fire, Malfoy and Goyle are saved by Harry Potter and Ron Weasly. The diadem burns in demon fire, so Harry's plan to destroy the diadem works.
Death Eaters in the castle
The order's plans to keep the Death Eaters away from the castle fail, the Death Eaters invade the castle.
Fight in the castle
During the battle for the diadem, other battles began:
Assassination of Snape
Lord Voldemort kills Severus Snape, thinking he must kill him for the Elder Wand to be his.
Lord Voldemort calls for the end of the battle because, in his opinion, too much magical blood was shed. He challenges Harry Potter to face his fate and come to the forbidden forest. Harry Potter learns from Snape's memories that he must die in order for Voldemort to be killed. He comes into the forest and is killed by Lord Voldemort without fighting back. Harry Potter then protects all Hogwartsians, just as his mother protected him. Harry Potter survives the killing curse as Voldemort has his blood running in his veins. He plays dead and the Death Eaters think they have won.
Fight in the great hall
The Centaurs, The Thestrals, Unknown Reinforcements and the giant Grawp begin to fight the Death Eaters when Voldemort shows everyone that Harry Potter is dead. The battle begins again.
Harry vs Voldemort
Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort face each other. Harry uses the Expelliarmus and Voldemort the Avada Kedavra. Lord Voldemort's curse ricochets off Harry's curse, killing Lord Voldemort, since the Elder Wand Voldemort is using is actually Harry's. The Second Wizarding War is over with the death of Voldemort, and the Hogwartsians win the battle.
