Elementary school is important

Fit for primary school in 8 steps - tips for parents

One thing in advance: Do not worry! Many parents are afraid that their offspring are not yet able to cope with everyday primary school life. In fact, the little ones in kindergarten already learn almost everything they need to start school. However, the kindergarten cannot impart a few skills for school all on its own. However, you as a parent can encourage this with a few tricks. We'll tell you how:

Fit for primary school: This is how your child is well prepared for school

A successful start to school also means giving the children the "inner" equipment and not just think of satchels, exercise books and the like. Can the ABC shooter express his or her own opinion? Can he endure situations that are not entirely up to his head? Does he dare to ask questions? According to educators, these social skills are more important for future primary school students than being able to read, write or do arithmetic. But parents can easily help their children with this:

1. Promote coordination: Body control and fine motor skills are important

Your offspring not only needs a good body feeling when moving through the classroom. The coordination of eyes, hands and feet is also required when playing in a group and when doing handicrafts. And fine motor skills are an important prerequisite for learning to write.

This is how parents can support:

Simple everyday tasks strengthen motor coordination. Brush your teeth, tie ribbons, color in pictures (without getting over the edge) and fold paper - small exercises that benefit hand-eye coordination and prepare children's hands for writing in school. Balancing over tree trunks, jumping games and cycling ensure good whole-body coordination. Playing outside is not only healthy, it also prepares you for elementary school.

2. Take responsibility: You are already big!

Children in elementary school have to do their tasks independently and memorize announcements from the teachers and, if necessary, communicate them to their parents. In addition, it is not bad when ABC shooters also voluntarily take on a task for the class community. Last but not least, students are responsible for their materials, such as pens, books, lunch boxes and gym bags.

This is how parents can support:

Give your children light household chores such as watering flowers or cleaning the table from an early age. When shopping, for example, your child could memorize three things on the shopping list, search for them and put them in the shopping cart. This is good preparation for school, which of course also relieves the parents. At the same time, it gives the children the feeling, "I can do this on my own. I can do it. I'm already big!" - the basis for approaching tasks with motivation.

3. Exercise patience: Lessons are sometimes long

To dedicate yourself to a task for a longer period of time and not to quit for "no reason" has to be practiced a little more, especially at the beginning, in order to get fit for elementary school.

This is how parents can support:

Sitting still at meals together, handicrafts such as threading beads or games such as puzzles or memory increase stamina. Listening to a story without talking in between is also good preparation. Let your child go look into the book while reading and at the same time follow the text with your finger, then your ABC-Sagittarius will remember the writing direction from left to right. In this way, you can gradually lengthen your child's attention span.

4. Be well prepared: order in your satchel and children's room

At school it is important that your child keeps their documents properly and always has everything with them.

This is how parents can support:

In order to make your child fit for everyday life in primary school, it is good if they learn how to keep order. So that the youngsters can keep track of their work materials even after they have started school, you can, for example, jointly set up subjects for school supplies and sort them by topic. A checklist that states which things your child has to pack on which day will help ensure that nothing is forgotten.

5. Become familiar with the lesson content: let's play school!

The ABC-Sagittarius learn to read, arithmetic and write in primary school. So there is no need to worry if children cannot do this when they start school. Writing your own name and counting to ten is sufficient. It is of course not forbidden to prepare your child a little for school material and to make them fit (ter) for elementary school; as long as this happened without pressure and with fun. For example, you can read aloud regularly and make the child want to learn to read.

Parents can provide additional support:

Why don't you play school together? You need an alarm clock as a break bell (approx. 15 minutes per lesson block), a table at which the student can sit, and a blackboard (preferably a larger piece of paper pinned to the wall).

A couple of suggestions:

  • For example, your child could cut letters and numbers out of cardboard or draw on stencils so that they can memorize the shape of these symbols. (You can also make sure that your offspring is holding the scissors and pencil correctly. Children should do this correctly from the start. Once they have got used to a position, it is difficult to change it again.)

  • Then mix the numbers and letters out on a table. Bring up an icon and have your child point to it as quickly as possible. In this way, your children will associate the shapes with their names.

  • A great exercise that will stimulate your child's imagination and give them a feel for sounds is to rhyme together. You come up with a rhyme for your child to finish. "It's very hot today, so I'm having a ..."

  • Finally, you can turn the tables and let your child teach you. It's fun and takes the exercise seriously. In addition, your offspring must immediately apply the newly acquired knowledge in order to give you tasks. Your offspring are guaranteed to be fit for primary school.

6. Being able to accept criticism: one learns from mistakes!

Many children experience criticism for the first time in school. That is not always easy. But schoolchildren have to be able to lose from time to time and shouldn't be discouraged by a setback. After all, this will happen more often during school career and later in life.

This is how parents can support:

Also tell your son or daughter if he or she has not done something so well (the sound plays the music!). In a race or other joint games, your little one can "lose". The important thing to emphasize is that one "Defeat" is not a bad thing, you can deal with it calmly and learn from it. An important lesson that prepares children for elementary school.

7. Learn to communicate: "I feel good because ..."

Since parents cannot play mice in the classroom, it is important that children tell how they feel in school. A good preparation therefore also includes teaching the NBC shooters to talk about their own feelings and to say when something does not please you.

This is how parents can support:

Speak openly about your feelings: "I am very happy today because ..." or "... that annoyed me very much today." If they inquire about your child's feelings, use questions that it cannot answer with just yes / no or good / bad. These are questions like "What did you like at school today?" or "What did you laugh at the most?" But also accept if your offspring does not always tell you about their day in detail right away. Just take advantage of a later opportunity. Getting fit for elementary school also means being confident and knowing that you are being taken seriously.

8. Promote enthusiasm: Start elementary school in a good mood

Some children have mixed feelings about starting school. On the one hand, there is the joy of finally being one of the greats. On the other hand, future schoolchildren are tormented by saying goodbye to kindergarten friends they have come to love. Your offspring should of course start their school days with a good feeling so that no school fears arise.

This is how parents can support:

Promote the anticipation of starting school by buying school supplies together and letting your child choose everything, from school bags to gym bags to pencil cases.

The contact with kindergarten friends is also usually very good for the little ones and helps across the spatial separation. In addition, most children are especially happy when a small celebration is held for school enrollment.
