History:

The foundation by the guards: The Green Lantern Corps was founded 3 billion years ago by the Guardians of the Universe. The Guardians are an ancient people (they have existed for 5 billion years) and originally came from the planet Maltus. They later relocated to planet Oa and founded the before the Green Lantern Corps Manhunter. These were robots and were supposed to maintain peace in the universe under the control of the Guardians. The Manhunters however, rebelled against their creators. That is why the Guardians formed the Green Lantern Corps. They divided the universe into 3600 sectors and used an individual for each sector, no longer robots, who should bravely defend their sector against evil. The guards equip each lantern with a power ring from which it can generate hard light projections. The limits of these projections is limited only by the wearer's imagination. The ring also acts as a database, translator and gives the ability to travel through space. However, the energy of the ring is limited. It has to be recharged at the central battery on Oa every 24 hours. The guards set up the central battery on Oa in which the green energy of willpower was concentrated and stored.

The Earthly Lanterns:
Alan Scott was the first Earthly Green Lantern, and made its first appearance in All-American Comics # 16 in 1940. So he appeared before DC Comics had the Green Lantern Corps and his ring had a weakness against wood. It was only later (1985) that the Comics Verlag added it to the history of the Green Lantern Corps. After that, Scott was not the first GL on earth. Yalan Gur at the time of antiquity, a Chinese, was therefore the first. A lampmaker later used the remains of his lantern battery to build this lantern, which saved the life of engineer Alan Scott during a test run of a train.

Hal Jordan became the second human GL in Showcase # 22 in 1959. He received the ring from Albin Sur. A lantern that made an emergency landing with his spaceship on earth and was dying. He rose to become one of the most powerful and influential ring bearers. Became his archenemy Sinestro, a renegade Green Lantern who was in possession of a yellow power ring.
However, it was Jordan who later, driven by anger and desperation, destroyed the Green Lantern Corps. After his hometown Coast City was destroyed by super villain Mongul and its inhabitants were killed, Hal demanded more power from the guards to undo this. When the guards refused to do so, he went insane and killed almost all of the Lanterns and (almost) all of the guards. When he then destroyed the central battery on Oa, he merged with the evil, almost omnipotent being imprisoned in the battery Parallax. He later sacrificed himself to save the earth, then reappeared as Specter.

Guy Gardner and John Stewart were transitional lanterns who did their job well but didn't add much to the history of the Corps. Guy became the first Honorary Lantern with no dedicated sector.

Kyle Rayner is the lantern named by the last surviving Guardian Ganthet receives a ring that was created from fragments of the central battery. This ring did not have the weakness against yellow (since parallax was no longer inherent in the battery) and did not have to be charged every 24 hours. It was also he who persuaded Hal Jordan / Parallax to re-ignite the sun and thereby save the earth. Hal was killed and the power of parallax passed to Kyle. This made him a god-like being named Oblivion. He sacrificed much of his power to revive the Guardians and create a new central battery on Oa. He recruited members and re-established the corps. Kyle became the second Honorary Lantern.

Non-earthly members (the best known):
  • Kilowog comes from the planet Bolovax Vik and is also a member of the Green Lantern Corps. He acted as an instructor for Hal Jordans and was even a brief member of the JLA.
  • Sinestro (first appearance August 1961 in Green Lantern # 7) from the planet Korugar, was once an influential lantern. The power spoiled him, however, with his yellow ring he became a bitter enemy of the Corps and especially of Hal Jordan.
  • Tomar-Re was a Xudarian, a race from the planet Xudar in Sector 2813. He was close friends with Abin Sur. He was also the first Lantern that Hal Jordan met on Oa and the two hit it off right away.
  • Abin Sur, Green Lantern from Sector 2814, came from the planet Ungara. He made an emergency landing with his spaceship on earth and was seriously injured. Before he dies, his ring finds a successor on earth - Hal Jordan.

Green Lantern Corps in the film:
